Mojo:lations: Blogging, the beach & more chuva!

It seems like the past few weeks have been part of the most hectic summer I’ve experienced in a long time. With the inclement weather done and over with (at least for now), the summer events are racking up... one after the other. Again, I’m writing my column from the shores of Boracay, the season’s unofficial hub for summer shindigs and events. I’ll fill you in on what I’m on the island for this time in next week’s Mojo:lations – but for now, read on to see what’s been happening on Boracay shores the past few weeks as well as other fun-filled chuva to look out for. Enjoy!

Boracay Blogging

It was back to Boracay for a Bloggers Summit spearheaded by www.donavictorina.com, one of the country’s foremost blog forums for socio-civic and political issues. Powered by Philips, the summit focused on how to save Boracay and other beaches around the globe from the threat of over-development. Dozens environmentally concerned bloggers from all over the world joined the summit via teleconference and shared their ideas with the contingent of pinoy blog personalities present led by Attorney Trixie Angeles in a concerted effort to save the shores of one of the Philippines’ prime tourist destinations.

While on the topic of blogging, I’d like to congratulate blog diva extraordinaire Cecile Zamora-Van Straten, who is better known online as the brains behind www.chuvaness.com, for being proclaimed the Preview + Samsung’s Style Icon winner of 2009!

Balls on the Beach

After the Boracay Bloggers Summit, it was off to enjoy some fun in the sun with one of the newest sporting crazes to hit Philippine shores! Summer sports history was made in Boracay when the Nestlé Pops’ Dodge ‘n Pop 2009 Summer Dodgeball Games were held on the island over the recent Labor Day weekend. The star-studded competition, sanctioned by the Philippine Dodgeball Association, marked an innovative twist to the increasingly popular sport with the games officially being brought to the beach for the first time.

A large crowd gathered as hot celebrities, including the likes of Krista Ranillo, Cesca Litton, Tisha Silang, Grace Lee and Mark Nelson, took part in some exciting dodgeball action under the sun alongside tournament competitors vying for the top prize.

The champion team Boracay Dragons bested 13 others for the historic title, R10,000 in cash, and loads of other prizes from Nestlé and event sponsors Hawaiian Tropic, Rider After Sports Footwear, and media sponsors Magic 89.9, MTV, Sports Unlimited, Garage Magazine and Stella Magazine. Spectators also got involved in the excitement with fun mini games. Free snacks were handed out to all comers courtesy of Nestlé Pops. Jeffrey Rodriguez of the winning team was chosen Most Valuable Player and won a cool Philips GoGear mp3 player.

VJ/DJ Andrea Manzano, the face behind the Nestlé Pops television commercial was also at hand to join the competition and sample the delicious chocolate-coated bite-sized vanilla ice cream, Nestlé Pops. “The game is so fun!” said Andi. “I’m glad that dodgeball is taking it to the next level. Playing on the beach is even harder than on a regular court but twice the fun!”

Nestlé Ice Cream executive Gel Angeles expressed optimism that the first Boracay competition signaled the beginning of an annual summer sports event. “Nestlé Pops and beach dodgeball are a perfect fit. Both are unconventional, but fun at the same time. We hope to mark every summer with this competition,” said Angeles.

Benedict Camara, President of the Philippine Dodgeball Association, which sanctioned the celebrity event exclaimed, “This is how dodgeball is supposed to be – Informal, fun, honest, exciting, competitive. Where everyone from the celebrities to hosts to participants to spectators actively participate in the game!”

PCD Back in Town

“My Name is Nicole.” Who can forget this line? Nicole Scherzinger, the Pussycat Doll’s sexy half-Filipina lead singer, was recently seen all over Philippine television as Clear’s newest global endorser. Her confidence, power and charisma shine through in each performance showcasing world-class vocals and sexy dance moves.

Clear and MTV Philippines bring you “A Clear Doll Domination: The Pussycat Dolls Live in Manila” this coming June 11 at the SM Mall of Asia Concert grounds. Let them take the hotness meter a notch hotter as you witness the Dolls’ moves live once again. This is going to be 2009’s sexiest concert! Fans can visit www.clear.com.ph to see how they can get up to 50% off.
